The Project
Harsfold Barn is situated about half a mile from Wisborough Green in West Sussex and also just over a mile from the boundary of the South Downs National Park.
The brief was to convert the barn into a family home with a modern twist. All the character of the barn was preserved to create a warm family home. The use of more contemporary features such as electric switchable glass either side of the entrance doors and specialist resin flooring created the modern twist our clients required.
The barn was sympathetically repaired and converted, with a high quality finish into a five bedroom family home by Nicholls Countryside Construction. It was important to protect the historical and architectural integrity of the barn with the main emphasis placed upon the preservation of the character and history of the building.
The oak frame of the building was repaired and repegged insitu using air dried oak replacements where framing members were missing. And in the case of the southern bay of the barn it was brought out of storage after it collapsed in the great storm of 1987.
The alterations made have been sensitively designed to a very high standard and have resulted in significant improvements to the condition of the barn and have now ensured its long term preservation.
New landscaping has been incorporated into the scheme with native planting to complement the appearance of the building.
