The Project

Originally the farmhouse was an open hall house dating from as early as the late 15th century. During the project we discovered that this original hall house had been altered and added to, to create two attached cottages probably in the 1700s. Then around 1850 the Sussex red brick west extension and the front principal south elevation was added to create the Queen Anne style house we see now.

On the north and east elevations there is surviving timber framing to the ground floor. Whilst the 1950’s plastic weatherboarding has been replaced with hang tiling as it would have been.

Internally the fabric of the building was altered to suit the changes required for current family living. The kitchen was relocated to utilise the largest family space and is now an open plan bespoke farmhouse kitchen leading to a dining area.

The introduction of ensuite bathrooms included a large walk in shower located within the existing chimney space on the first floor. Underneath this area on the ground floor a library nook has been created with an oak seat that spans the space complete with an engraving of the family motto.

Located within the new first floor extension is the master ensuite. It combines traditional features with modern comforts, such as a corner walk-in shower and under floor heating.

A particular favourite feature of ours was the discovery of an original Oak mullion window. This was found when stripping back some of the layers of wallpaper. We lime rendered between the mullions in order to allow it to remain exposed.

Nicholls are proud to have enhanced the historic character of this delightful country home.
