Award Winning Modern Extension to a Grade 2 Listed Sussex Farmhouse

The main objective was to thoughtfully and sympathetically refurbish the existing Grade 2 listed 16th Century Heritage Asset and to build a 21st Century extension to help meet requirements of family living. Also, to increase the appreciation of the garden and facilitate the relaxed flow between garden and living accommodation.

The Project

The Modern extension (formerly the footprint of a 1960’s garage block) design, build and material selection was collaboratively agreed to meet the demanding listed building consent guidelines.

The complex roof to the extension, clad in Cumbrian slate, now compliments the Horsham stone roof of the house. Perhaps the external “Jewel in the Crown” at Coneyhurst.

Our client’s home is evolving to support an eco and biodiversity profile. A GSHP was installed during the build programme. The next initiative is to supplement it with solar panels. Outside, work is ongoing to ensure the lake can be restocked with native fish, introducing beehives etc. all small but important steps. It was important to meet the main objective in a sustainable way that does not harm the listed building or its setting.

Client Testimonial

SUSSEX HERITAGE TRUST AWARD 2021 WINNER

“Nicholls undertook a total restoration of our Grade II listed property including a new build extension. Mutual trust was established from our first meeting, and ‘Wow!’ did they deliver, exceeding all expectations to give us a beautiful home. The 18-month project has been an enjoyable journey working with an engaging and personable team of professionals, albeit supplemented with lemon drizzle cake!

The quality of workmanship was exemplary with each individual taking a professional and personal pride in their contribution. Refurbishing a 16th century house throws up the unexpected. These challenges demonstrated the knowledge and experience within Nicholls and, equally important the empathy, to retain and restore the character of the building. This extended to the construction of our linked extension where modern building techniques prevailed with eco-credentials. Communication throughout their company is impressive, supported by a backroom team who “oil the wheels” to make it happen.

Thanks to Richard and his team we have a 16th century home linking to a 21st century extension sitting in perfect harmony.”
